Software Salad...
Well welcome to another fine article on the crazy world of computers. In this little entry, I am going to touch on the topic of our operating environment , or the software environment . This is the area of our computer that gets infected the most, and we have the largest responsibility in keeping it clean and running good.
The Hardware is the stuff made on the factory lines and it is made up of components and bits and pieces of wire, metal and circuits. This is the bowl of the salad if you will, as it it the chunk of your computer that should not be easily changed without doing physical damage. The software is the salad itself.
We all know a good salad from a bad one and we know this can happen from adding just one to many ingredients or by it just missing something. The concept here is to understand that the running environment on your machine can be corrupted or beautiful and well balanced. This is the quality of your SOFTWARE SALAD.
As an example you can take two identical machines, exact everything on them, all the same hardware drives and motherboards. Same chips and monitors.
The difference here is whats running on them. You install an identical program on each of them. It runs fine on one machine and doesn't run at all on the other.
The one machine the person is having a good old time using the program and on the other machines owner spends hours on the phone with technical support trying to get the problem fixed.
The difference (using common sense) is the SOFTWARE on the machines. One machine doesn't have any software that is conflicting with the new program. The other machine has a software CONFLICT.
Generally people blame the manufacturer for these errors only to find that it is something they have installed on their machine and has nothing to do with the creator of the machine at all. This SOFTWARE SALAD, also can effect the way your hardware works. Like the salad is so strong it destroys the bowl or stains it or cracks it.
When software installed on a machine effects the machines hardware, theres a problem - find out what it is and get it off your machine right away. So in a nut shell, our operating environment is the salad. The computer hardware the bowl.
The salad effects everything, what you add to the salad can make or break your machine. Be sure you research a program before you install it on your computer- see what others think or say about it before you take the time to install it.
If your computer was a loved one or a child, you would not just feed them something you found on the ground or something you thought LOOKED good, or MIGHT be good for them. We are going to ensure it is healthy and is not going to kill them when they eat it. Do no less for your computer, and it will be running great for you for years to come it is your friend.
